Pakistan’s Hunza Valley Becomes Asia’s First Plastic Free District
A similar campaign will be carried out in Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Hunza has become the first plastic-free district of Pakistan as stated by the adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam,
While addressing a ceremony, he said that Hunza has taken the lead in becoming the first district of the country as well as Asia to be plastic-free.
“The people of Hunza deserve congratulations for implementing the ban. I hope they will continue cooperating with the administration to keep the city clean and free of plastic bags,” Malik Amin Aslam said.
He added that a similar campaign will be carried out in Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan. Furthermore, section 144 on the use of plastic bags was also imposed in the valley.
The district administration of Hunza distributed a total of 10,000 cloth bags following the ceremony. As per a circular by the administration, “Plastic bags are detrimental to the natural environment and human health. All the traders dealing in plastic bags should end their stock by April 20.
