The Minister of State for Narcotics Control Shehryar Afridi has generated a buzz on social media after saying the government is planning to open a factory in Tirah in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that would make medicines from drugs (chars).
The Independent Urdu asked leading experts If medicine could actually be made from cannabis or other drugs, and which drug in particular.
Fazal Nasir, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Peshawar, who holds a Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences, told The Independent Urdu that “a lot of research has been done all over the world on cannabis, commonly known as chars.”
Nasir said that it is mostly used in medicines for acute pain. As cannabis is used in the medicine that is given to relieve pain at the final stage for a cancer patient. It is also used in medicine for the treatment of depression.
The professor further added, “It is not as if cannabis is mixed with a drug, rather a specific content is extracted from cannabis plants and then used for medicine on a scientific basis.”
Professor Fazal Nasir explained that ‘all drugs are scientifically altered or modified and then used to make medicine.’
Is cannabis safe to use?
Peter Greenspoon teaches at Harvard University’s Medical School. He has done a lot of research on the safe use of cannabis and whether it should be allowed legally.
Greenspoon said, “The use of cannabis is allowed in 29 states in the United States, but according to the federal government it is illegal.
According to Peter’s research, cannabis can be used to relieve muscle aches and has the potential to reduce Parkinson’s disease.
Greenspoon added that cannabis is also used as a medicine for the treatment of glaucoma or green cataracts.
