In an exciting new development, and for the first time in the region’s history, a girls’ literary festival was organized in the North Waziristan tribal district.

The primary purpose of this was to provide a competitive platform to female students and help them discover their skills by indulging them in extracurriculars.

North Waziristan holds first-ever girls’ literary festival

The Adabi Mela, which took place from 12th February to 17th February 2023, had eight different categories, like drawing, painting, recitation of Asma-ul-Husna, Bait Bazi, declamation contest, national songs, essay writing, Urdu quiz, and Pashto poetry to gauge the competitive skills of students.

The participation was very significant in the literary festival, with as many as 146 students taking part in the event from different schools in the North Waziristan district. Those who were present at the event appreciated the initiative taken by the security forces and remarked that such events should also be organized in the future.

There is a lot of talent amongst the girls in the tribal district, which goes unnoticed and overlooked due to limited opportunities for women. However, it is essential for authorities to ensure that adequate chances are provided to women from underprivileged areas, so they can showcase their own talent as well.

Why are literary festivals important?

A prime reason why literary festivals are fundamental in Pakistan is that they hold great significance in binding together literature, traditions, and cultures. Likewise, these festivals are a source of disseminating intellect amongst the citizens, and they encompass a celebration of heritage, culture, and literature.

Normally, the festivals invite poets, thespians, authors, critics, philosophers, novelists, and academicians. One reason why literary festivals have significantly increased in the nation is that they serve as a replacement for conventional cultural festivals. These events offer a colorful, and open platform to thoroughly discuss aspects of society that the media might miss.
