India declared the most dangerous country for women, Pakistan stands on 6th

According to a new survey, India is the most dangerous and unsafe country for women due to the high risk of sexual violence, rape cases, and slave labour.

The study was carried out by Thomson Reuters Foundation. Survey results of 550 experts on women issues were released this Tuesday, finding India to be the most dangerous nation for women in the world.

The determining factors for the ranking are sexual violence, forced labour, forced marriage, human trafficking for domestic work and sexual slavery.

Not only these, but the survey also found India the most dangerous country for cultural traditions and practices that impact women – citing physical abuse, child marriage, female genital mutilation and acid attacks. India was found the fourth most dangerous country in the same survey seven years back.

As per the data, there is an 83% increase in crimes against women between the year 2007 and 2016. During this period, as many as 4 rape cases have been registered every hour.

9 out of 10 countries on the list were from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Pakistan is also among the list of top ten most dangerous countries for women. The USA is the only Western country on the list – due to the vial #MeToo movement. Here is the list for the year 2018:

  1. India
  2. Afghanistan
  3. Syria
  4. Somalia
  5. Saudi Arabia
  6. Pakistan
  7. Democratic Republic of Congo
  8. Yemen
  9. Nigeria
  10. The United States of America

An Indian state official showed great disappointment on the results.

‘’India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women … rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated’’ – he said (Source: Dunya News)

The survey included responses from all the 193 countries that are part of the United Nations. Around 548 individuals (social commentators, development specialists, policy-makers, non-government organization workers, healthcare staff, academics and aid professionals) participated in the survey. Results were collected through in-person meetings, phone contacts, and online polls.
