Indian court sentences a man accused of attempted rape to 6 months of washing victim’s clothes

According to media reports, an Indian court has sentenced a man in Bihar, India, accused of attempted rape, to washing women’s clothes for six months. Sources state that the order has been issued as a condition of granting bail to the accused. Upon completing the condition, the court will provide bail to the accused man – 20-year-old Lalan Kumar.
Details of the Rape Case
Details of Lalan Kumar’s case haven’t been unveiled to the public yet. Santosh Kumar Singh, a police officer, said:
Lalan Kumar, who washes clothes for a living, was detained in April on charges including attempted rape. No date has been set for his trial.
Details of the Punishment
According to details, the 20-year-old accused man washes women’s clothes as punishment in his village. It is pertinent to mention that Kumar also buys detergent and other products himself to provide six months of free laundry services to the village women.
As per the court guidelines, Kumar will regularly offer free laundry services to approximately 2,000 women in the village of Majhor before he can apply for bail.
Majhor Village’s Reaction to the Punishment
Nasima Khatoon, the village head and one of the villagers who monitor Kumar, said:
All the women in the village are happy with the court decision of the accused man washing women’s clothes as punishment. It is historic. It will boost respect for women and help protect their dignity.
