A new Netflix show that talks about an Indian matchmaker catering to the high demands of potential brides and grooms, and their parents, has stoked an online debate about arranged marriages in the country.

The new eight-part series “Indian Matchmaking” recently premiered on Netflix and is currently among one of the most  top-ranked India shows. The show features Sima Taparia, a real-life matchmaker, who offers her services to families within India and abroad.

The show has highlighted how individuals and their parents are picky and have a long list of demands centered around factors like caste, height, or skin color. It has become a subject of memes, jokes, and criticism.

Many people have taken to social media platforms to discuss how the show makes it evident how regressive Indian communities are and how sexism, casteism, and classism are a prevalent part of finding a life partner. Netizens emphasized how the show is merely holding a mirror to the ugly society we are a part of.

Smirti Mundhra is an Oscar-nominated director who has received a lot of hate for the show. However, many have praised Indian Matchmaking for its honesty and treating its subjects respectfully.

“The hate against it is, frankly, baffling … Indian Matchmaking is well on its way to becoming a cultural phenomenon,” a column in the Mint newspaper said.
