Why are internet services disrupted in Pakistan?
The concerned authorities have not announced when the issue will be resolved.
Internet services across Pakistan have been disrupted as a major submarine cable joining Pakistan to the outside world is offline.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authorities confirmed that the southeast Asia–Middle East–Western Europe (5SEA-ME-WE-5) submarine cable went offline yesterday after it developed a fault near Cairo, Egypt.
The SEA-ME-WE-5 cable carries a major part of the country’s internet traffic. It has a design capacity of 24Tbps, which essentially serves almost half of Pakistan’s international bandwidth requirements.
Following this, internet companies updated their customers regarding the service issues, as the submarine cable has gone offline.
The concerned authorities have not announced when the issue will be resolved; however, they confirm that the rectification process could take up to 15 days.
