Islamabad Capital Territory Police launch a 24/7 ‘Gender Protection Unit’ to safeguard women and children

According to ASP Islamabad, Amna Baig, victims can call the helpline number - 8090 - when needed to ask for protection and help.

According to media reports, the capital police have launched a gender protection unit to help women and children victims. The gender protection unit has been launched to address harassment, domestic violence, rape, and other related issues.

A statement released by the Inspector General Police (IGP) Qazi Jamilur Rehman during the inauguration ceremony of the unit at the facilitation center in F-6 read:

Well-trained female police staff has been deployed at the desk of the gender protection unit. Medical staff, including a psychiatrist, is available to assist the affected women and children.

Talking about the initiative, the IGP said:

There is a need to devise a mechanism to provide all needed facilities to the victims of oppression under one roof. We have developed this mechanism in the form of a protection unit.

How can victims access the Gender Protection Unit?

According to ASP Islamabad, Amna Baig, victims can call the helpline number – 8090 – when needed to ask for protection and help. A team would instantly approach the victim from the gender protection unit to relieve the sufferer (women and children) of any harm.

Amna Baig said:

The helpline will remain active 24/7 for women and children to approach the police in times of need directly. The police have set up the unit and the helpline to provide immediate assistance to women and children facing injustice.

The residents of Islamabad are delighted at the efforts of the Islamabad Capital Territory Police to help oppressed women and children. People residing in other cities are now looking forward to a similar initiative being launched in their regions.
