Italy: Pakistan-origin parents suspected to have killed 18-year-old daughter for refusing arranged marriage
During the investigation, officers discovered that the girl’s parents had left for Pakistan.
The Pakistani parents of an 18-year-old girl residing in Italy are suspected to have killed their daughter for refusing an arranged marriage. Investigation into the matter is underway, as the police of Italy are searching for the young girl’s body.
Details about the Missing Girl Saman Abbas
Saman lived in the northern town of Novellara, Italy with her family. The young girl rebelled against her family’s traditional plan to have her wedded to a cousin in their home country last year – that is when the trouble began.
While still a minor, Saman Abbas turned to social services and in November was moved into a shelter home. According to reports, the young girl had reported her parents to the police once, but on the 11th of April, she returned to them.
How did the Police find out about the girl?
Police started searching for Saman Abbas on the 5th of May when officers visited her house for inspection and found nobody. The vacant house triggered an investigation. Since then, officers have been combing through the farmland to find the missing girl, Saman Abbas.
During the investigation, officers discovered that the girl’s parents had left for Pakistan without Saman Abbas. The investigation officers found images from a nearby security camera that made them fear the worst.
What did the Security Camera unveil?
The security camera footage revealed five people walking out of the house holding shovels, a crowbar, and a bucket, on the night of the 29th of April. About two-and-a-half hours later, the group returned.
The Carabinieri police identified the five people in the footage as the family members suspected of Saman Abbas’s murder. All are believed to have left Italy for Pakistan.
The Suspects being tried for the Alleged Murder
Although Saman’s parents secretly returned to Pakistan, they are under probe for the allegations against them.
According to reports, the girl’s parents, her uncle, and two cousins are under investigation for murder. Lt Col Stefano Bove of the Carabinieri police said:
All are supposed to have taken part in the crime. The Carabinieri police are inspecting wells, irrigation canals, and greenhouses to find the young girl.
Solidarity Rally for Saman Abbas
Hundreds of people took to the streets on Friday to take part in a solidarity rally organized by the town hall of Novellara for the missing girl. In a video posted online, the mayor of the town, Elena Carletti, said:
Saman, tonight you are not alone and you will never again be alone.
While the people of Novellara hope to find justice for young Saman Abbas, the investigation is still underway. The police of Italy still haven’t been able to find the 18-year-old’s body.
