Italy begins issuing ‘work visa’ for Pakistani citizens. Here’s all that you need to know
Workers from agriculture, construction, tourism, and freight forwarding sectors can benefit from this opportunity.
The government of Italy has permitted Pakistani citizens to apply for seasonal and non-seasonal work visas called ‘Decreto-Flussi’ for 2020-21.
According to details, the Italian government would issue over 30,000 work visas to a few non-European Union countries, including Pakistan.
Workers from the agriculture, construction, tourism, and freight forwarding sectors can benefit from this opportunity.
After two years, Pakistan has been included in the visa category because of relentless efforts made by the Pakistani embassy in Rome.
Speaking to a local media channel, the Pakistani Ambassador to Italy, Jauhar Saleem, said, “Italy hosted the biggest Pakistani diaspora in the EU following Brexit, who sent over $142 million in payments in 2019-20.”
The Ambassador shared that Pakistan’s community in Italy had been asking for Pakistan’s re-inclusion in the list of countries allowed for seasonal worker visas, ever since it was banned two years ago.
Saleem added that the demand for Pakistani workers in the Italian market has increased, mainly in the agriculture sector. “It is expected that hundreds of Pakistani workers will obtain profitable employment in Italy under the current scheme,” he added.
Earlier, the Pakistan embassy said it expedited thousands of unauthorized Pakistani workers in Italy seeking legal status through a scheme launched by the Italian government in June 2020 to regularize the undocumented foreign workers. Over 18,000 Pakistani workers applied for regularization under the program.
Despite the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pakistani embassy said it had kept its consular section functional in Milan and Rome to help the community seek employment opportunities in the European country.
