Judge irked as NAB tells that it is unaware of Malik Riaz’s whereabouts

Riaz skipped another court hearing on Bahria Icon Tower Karachi case.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was clueless when asked about Malik Riaz’s whereabouts after he skipped another court hearing in Bahria Icon Tower Karachi case.

Last month, when Judge Mohammad Bashir continued the proceedings in the reference filed against the business tycoon last month for encroaching upon state land, four respondents, including Malik Riaz, his son-in-law Zain Malik, ex-executive director of Karachi city government master plan Waqar Raffat was absent from court.

The judge was not happy with the attitude and wanted to issue a proclamation against Mr Riaz and other suspects for being absent. However, he was reminded by the counsel for former commissioner Abdul Subhan Memon that the proclamation could be issued only after the court starts proceeding under Section 87-88 of criminal procedure court. Under this section, the court declares the fugitive a proclaimed offender and attaches his/her properties.

‘He has gone abroad and his destination is unknown’

A report was asked from NAB’s investigations officers and the proceedings were postponed for one hour. NAB officers confessed in front of the court that they were unaware of where Malik Riaz and Waqas were.

When the process server visited his house, the staff there told him that Mr Riaz had gone abroad and did not know his destination.

The judge asked the officer if the anti-graft watchdog had tried to investigate the suspect’s whereabouts. The officer replied that the bureau could not access the suspect’s records of travelling beyond the UAE.

The FIA personnel told the court that he had heard from someone that the defendant was currently in Canada. The judge then suggested the officer inform his close relatives about the court’s summons. Further hearings in this matter have been delayed till 20th March 2020.
