Disheveled family chants ‘Justice for Younis Brohi’ – a man who was left to drown by the police

While the poor woman mourns the loss of her young son, she is worried about the future of her innocent granddaughter, the only child of her late son.

Younis Brohi, a resident of Gujjar Nalla, Karachi, left home to bring breakfast for his family on the morning of the 18th of May and never returned. According to sources, the police allegedly rained sticks and stones on him on his way, causing him to fall into the Gujjar Nalla and drown.

Speaking to a media outlet, a resident of the area said:

Younis Brohi stopped on his way to talk with a group of his acquaintances when two policemen charged the group. All of them ran away, but the cops caught onto Younis Brohi when he fell. The cops mercilessly beat him up and left him for dead in the drain.

Another resident and an eyewitness, Khatun Basra, shared:

I saw two police officers beating and abusing Younis Brohi. I even heard one of the police officials yelling at his colleague to bring Brohi out of the drain, but it was too late to save him. I can identify the two policemen who tortured Brohi to death.

Family of the deceased in distress

While speaking to the media, the mother of Younis Brohi said:

We are protesting to seek justice for my child.

While the poor woman mourns the loss of her young son, she is worried about the future of her innocent granddaughter, the only child of her late son.

Younis Brohi’s saddened mother said she will go to any lengths to seek justice for her son. The woman further stated:

The police are spreading rumors that Younis died from drowning in the drain. A person can’t drown in knee-deep water, not even a small child can drown in it.

Family Members protest alleged death

Recently, family members and neighbors of Younis Brohi gathered in the shanty locality of Gujjar Nalla, Karachi to express their sympathies and protest the indecency shown by the police.

However, they called the protest off after receiving false assurances from the police that the accused officers have been arrested and will be produced in court after the completion of the investigation.

According to Younis Brohi’s family, the police have failed to identify the officers responsible for the young man’s death, let alone take action against them. The people of Gujjar Nala are disappointed with the police investigation into the death.

Police bring forward another side of the story

The police contest the version put forward by Younis Brohi’s family about the cause of his death. Investigation officer Inspector Zulfiqar said:

Nor any accused has been arrested in the case neither it has been confirmed that Younis Brohi was killed by the police. The cause of death will become clear when Brohi’s autopsy report is received.

Arif Brohi, a social worker in the area, dissatisfied with the police investigation said:

The police are dragging their feet in the case. First, they refused to register a case but were forced to do so after the protest.

It should be noted that the citizens are concerned about the rising incidents of public violence at the hands of the police. Many residents suggest that they will lose hope in Pakistan’s justice system if the law enforcers are continually found to be involved and guilty in the killing of innocent citizens.
