Karachi, once known as the ‘Paris of Asia’, has now turned into one giant unethical money-making machine for the Sindh Police.

Ever since the Sindh Government has announced COVID-19 lockdown measures in the metropolis, police officials have been engaged in bribery to permit the routine functioning of the city.

In many suburbs of Karachi, the police, in cahoots with the local administration, have allowed the local businesses to stay open till late at night, flouting the SOPs.

It has also been learned that the police and the local administration have reportedly set an hourly rate for letting the business operate beyond 6 pm, the time set by the provincial government to close businesses.

In the metropolis’s slums, the police are not only allowing businesses to stay open but are also willingly letting the movement of people go unabated.

An outcry by politicians and organizations

All Karachi Tajir Ittehad: About Us

The Chairperson of the AKTI, Atiq Mir, said that the Sindh Government has immensely disturbed the business community in the metropolis by imposing lockdowns.

According to Mir, the lockdowns were imposed by the provincial government to mint money via police and other departments in the guise of implementing Covid SOPs.

He added that the Sindh Government “took businesspersons and citizens hostage and turned Karachi into a police state”.

According to the city’s electronic market association, the business activity has been reduced by 25%, and immense challenges have been faced by the business community.

“Neither there was any sale, nor any business,” Mir lamented.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P)

The MQM-P legislators in Sindh Assembly strongly condemned the ‘conversion’ of Karachi into a police state.

The legislators said that the Sindh Government, under the guise of Corona SOPs, is violating the self-esteem of citizens and the rights of citizens.

The party also demanded the Minister of Interior, Sheikh Rashid, and IG Sindh to stop the police from crossing the line and breaking the law.

Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP)

The PSP Chairperson, Syed Mustafa Kamal, also alleged that in the name of the lockdown, the government officials had been abusing and extorting traders.

Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi)

The Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-Haqiqi) Chairperson, Afaq Ahmed, condemned the actions of the police of what he called a “biased attitude towards Karachi traders and people”.

Ahmed also alleged that the SOPs were being implemented in “only Mohajir areas” as it appeared that localities on the city’s outskirts were given exemption from the safety measures.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)

The PTI leader Samir Mir Shaikh said that the Sindh government seems to have completely failed to implement the Corona SOPs.

He said that instead of implementing SOPs, the policemen are busy collecting money from their respective areas, adding that while half of Karachi is facing lockdown, other parts of the metropolis remain open.

Organisation Restoration Committee Muttahida Qaumi Movement (OCR MQM)

The Chairperson of the OCR MQM, Dr. Farooq Sattar, said that the metropolis had been turned into an extortion haven for the police and district administration officials who were collecting bribes in exchange for allowing SOP violations.
