On Friday, officials of the Lesco grilled by the Senate Standing Committee over multi-million rupees embezzlement. The committee holds accountable some officials for consuming illegal money through using bogus bank stamps.

Although, for the last four years this deceptive practice is continuously part of Lesco’s billing department. However, no one bothers to excavate it neither the company nor the audit.

CEO of Lesco Shahid Iqbal tells the committee that electricity bills were collected from power consumers. He further states, in a single day through bogus and fake stamps embezzlement of Rs43 million was done.

Moreover, he admits that this practice is part of this organization for the last four years. “We have terminated the officers of the finance department”, he said. “Power consumers are also part of this fraud, as they were depositing their bills in revenue officer with 30pc discounts on their bills”, he further added.

Interrogation

Senator Nauman Wazir asked the Power Division to direct all Discos to inspect their records and present details to the committee. Besides, he asks to provide information about all the cases of the last ten years regarding this issue.

In response, the Power Division secretary says he would release orders to all companies to do so. Wazir further questions the credibility of the private sector for not digging up this fraud. In the next meeting, the committee will discuss this issue with the officials of the Auditor General of Pakistan.

Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC)

Senator Nauman Wazir suggests that organizations should not waste money on the implantation of AMI meters. He further says Ariel Bundled Cables (ABC) is the solution to control power theft. Other countries are successfully using a pre-paid card system in the power sector. Senator Sirajul Haq suggests the government introduce them in Pakistan to avoid inconvenience in the future.
