- As of now the prices of live bird and chicken meat touch an all-time high of 270 PKR to 280 PKR and 480 PKR to 500 PKR per kilogram respectively.
- The retailers blamed the dwindling supplies from the poultry farms against high demands for the soaring prices.
The ongoing inflation trends didn’t even leave the poultry sector unharmed. The prices of poultry live as well as slaughtered have been skyrocketing for quite some time. The rates remained considerably high even during the Eid-ul-Azha days when demand for the chicken was not so high due to the meat of sacrificial animals.
The representative of the Pakistan Poultry Association attributed the high prices to the risen prices of imported poultry feed. Abdul Maroof Siddiqui who is a member of PPA said, reported by Dawn, that the price of imported poultry feed ingredients (soybean, vitamins, and minerals) has risen due to depreciation of rupee against the greenback.
As of now the prices of live bird and chicken meat touch an all-time high of 270 PKR to 280 PKR and 480 PKR to 500 PKR per kilogram respectively. The retailers blamed the dwindling supplies from the poultry farms against high demands for the soaring prices. They attributed that the marriage season that followed Ashura increased the demands for chicken supply.
Mr. Siddiqui also said that live birds and its meat prices must not go beyond 252 PKR and 410 PKR respectively but the current rates indicate that people in the market are taking full advantage of high demand against low supply, adding that the slaughtering of poultry birds has fallen to 400,000-500,000 per day in Karachi from 800,000 to 900,000 birds a few months ago.
According to another dealer, the rate of boneless chicken hovers at 650 to 700 rupees which is more than the boneless beef. The official rates of chicken mentioned within the pricing list issued by Commissioner Karachi were found in contradiction with the market rates.
The official rates for broiler live birds and its meats are 250 PKR and 388 PKR respectively. Apart from Karachi, the prices of chicken in Punjab are also going objectionably high.
