‘A Local Government Commission Soon To Be Formed’, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan
The performance of the MCI has been unsatisfactory during both the PML-N and PTI governments due to unavailability of sufficient funds.
Despite the current issues between CDA (Capital Developmental Authority) and MCI (Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad), a Local Government Commission would be formed as approved by the cabinet meeting.
The local commission will be formed following the ICT Local Government Act 2015. Special Assistant to PM Imran Khan on Information, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, announced following a cabinet meeting.
Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan also told the press that delayed salaries of the sanitation staff were addressed in the meeting as well.
According to Awan, Chairman of CDA Amer Ali Ahmed informed the meeting that releasing salaries to the sanitation staff was the responsibility of MCI that they failed to perform, and as a result, the funds were released by the CDA.
It was further revealed by Dr. Awan that Ali Nawaz Awan (MNA) is approved to be the head of the Local Government Commission; whereas, Tayaba Ibrahim and Ali Bukhari (technocrats) would assist him.
As mentioned by the sources, the Local Government Commission will additionally include two members from the federal government, two from the senate and opposition members in the National Assembly.
MCI (Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad) was initially created after the elections of local government in November 2015. Sheikh Ansar Aziz was elected as the first mayor of the capital by the ruling PML-N.
