Private airlines in Pakistan will soon launch direct flights for Skardu amid the growing demand from local tourists who are yearning to visit Gilgit-Baltistan.

This development was confirmed by the Minister for Tourism, Sports, Culture and Archeology, and Youth Affairs (Gilgit-Baltistan), Raja Nasir Ali Khan Maqpoon, via a phone call with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

Moreover, North Air, a local private airline about to be launched soon, has recently been granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to operate flights from and to Skardu.

Maqpoon added that the authorities would provide full facilitation to any local private airline desiring to commence flight operations to and from Skardu.

It is pertinent to note that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) — the national carrier — recently commenced direct flight operations to various cities of the country.

These included Karachi (the Bride of the Cities), Lahore (the Paris of the East), Islamabad (the Green City), Faisalabad (the Manchester of Pakistan), and Sialkot (the City of Iqbal).

Maqpoon also stated that the construction work of Skardu Airport (KDU) started during the tenure of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) [PMLN].

However, the work was completed during the tenure of the incumbent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, which made serious efforts in this regard.

For this purpose, the airport’s runway is being expanded for wide-body aircraft landing.
