Pakistan’s Maleeha Lodhi elected as Vice President of UN’s Economic and Social Council

Pakistan’s permanent ambassador to the UN, a name known to all, Miss Maleeha Lodhi makes us proud once again. Making Pakistan’s presence felt at the global stage, Maleeha is among the four vice presidents of the Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc).

Maleeha was elected after her candidature was endorsed by the 54-member body. She will assume the Asia Pacific seat in the Ecosoc bureau. Norway’s ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Mona Juul, was elected as the president of the mentioned body. She replaced Rhonda King of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as president.

Along with Maleeha, the other elected vice presidents were Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Mher Margaryan (representing Eastern European states) and Deputy Permanent Representative of Mexico Juan Sandoval Mendiolea (representing Latina American and Carribean states).

Speaking about her election on Twitter, Maleeha said it is indeed a “vote of confidence from the global community” in Pakistan’s context.

”Pakistan’s election as Vice President of the Economic and Social Council ( ECOSOC) is a vote of confidence from the global community.ECOSOC is at the heart of the implementation of the 2030 agenda for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and mobilizing financing for SDGs”, Maleeha said.

She added that Pakistan always engaged enthusiastically in social and economic development activities at the UN and her election in the “important organ demonstrates the faith of [the] international community in Pakistan and the competence of its diplomats”.

She concluded saying that as vice president of the Council, she will continue to strive to build an atmosphere of mutual trust and partnerships in the spirit of multilateralism
