IHC urged to take notice of animal cruelty in Marghazar Zoo after lion and lioness die of suffocation
According to media, to get the animals out of the cage for shifting out of the facility, both the animals were beaten and scared in their cage.
On Wednesday, a lion and lioness died while being shifted from Islamabad’s Marghazar Zoo to Lahore. Islamabad High Court (IHC) had ordered the shift.
Private TV channels reported the details of the death. According to them, to get the animals out of the cage for shifting out of the facility, both the animals were beaten and scared in their cage.
Here is a video of the cruel treatment in which caretakers are seen lighting a fire inside the cage.
Due to the commotion, the animals got seriously injured and suffocated. They were taken to a veterinary hospital where the animals succumbed to their injuries.
The Friends of Islamabad Zoo (FIZ), an organization concerned about zoo animals’ welfare, is heartbroken at the loss of animal life at Marghazar Zoo. The FIZ team blames the unqualified employees and the poor management involved in the relocation of the animals from the zoo for the heartbreaking event.

A member of FIZ said:
We all strongly condemn this gross lack of oversight, which has resulted in the deaths of lions, two ostriches, and several other animals. FIZ, although a member of the care committee, was not informed about any part of the relocation process despite repeated requests.
With a heavy heart, FIZ stated that since its teams were unaware of the shift, they could not supervise the relocation and stand by the animals.
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier a nine-year-old female lion also died due to neglect at the Marghazar Zoo.
In light of this event, FIZ urges the IHC to take notice of the criminal negligence and animal cruelty at the facility. FIZ is looking forward to rightful punishments.
