The fifth death anniversary of the prominent Pakistani philanthropist and humanitarian, Abdul Sattar Edhi, is being observed today. 

The late founder of the Edhi Foundation was born on the 28th of February 1928 in Gujarat, India. 

His mother’s death moved him to establish a free clinic in Karachi in 1951 as she was not given healthcare on time.

He later established the world’s largest volunteer ambulance system and homeless shelters, orphanages, and animal shelters across the country.

The Edhi Foundation has provided relief in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Lebanon, Indonesia, and the United States.

Edhi was awarded several national honors, including Hilal-e-Imtiaz. His services were also acknowledged internationally. He was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize and received many awards, including the Gandhi Peace Award, Ahmadiyya Muslim Peace Prize, and the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize.

He died at the age of 88 on the 8th of July 2016 in Karachi.
