More than 10 children were sexually abused in Pakistan every single day in 2018 – Sahil report reveals
The reporting of cases of child abuse has increased by 11% in 2018 as compared to 2017. The recent report revealed that more than 10 children have suffered some form of abuse every day in Pakistan during the last year.
According to the report released last week, a total of 3,832 child abuse cases were reported by newspapers in all four provinces as well as Islamabad, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. In comparison with the year 2017, when 3,445 such incidents were reported between months of January and December, the number has seen a significant increase.
The report revealed the following major findings:
~ 3,832 cases of child abuse were reported in the year 2018, seeing a significant rise from the previous years.
~ The final results saw a 33% rise in child sexual abuse cases, though it can be linked with increased reporting.
~ Young girls were found to be more vulnerable to falling prey to sexual abuse, particularly in the age groups of 0-5 years and 16-18 years.
~ Boys in tender age were found to be more vulnerable as well, particularly between the ages 6-10 and 11-15
~ Most number of child abuse cases were reported from the province of Punjab, followed by Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

As per the stats for 2017, 9 children were abused daily. The crime categories included missing children (where the number stood at 517), abduction (number: 1039), rape (number: 467), attempt at rape (number: 206), sodomy (number: 366), gang sodomy (number: 180), gang rape (number: 158) and 143 cases of child marriages.
In comparison to the year 2018, where the number of reported cases was 2322 for the first six months only. This speaks for the reported cases from all four provinces, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) included. The statistics are taken from newspapers, hence the actual figures can be a lot higher.
For the initial six months, the reported cases of abduction stood at 542, sodomy at 381, rape at 360, missing children at 236, the attempt of rape at 224, gang sodomy at 167, attempt of sodomy at 112, gang rape at 92 and 53 cases of child marriages.
