The announcement that a Pfizer vaccine is 90 percent effective against the coronavirus has been hailed as a “miracle.” In the race against time, the news signaled that the fight against the virus is now turning in man’s favor.

On Monday, following the vaccine breakthrough report, BioNTech’s stock price went ballistic, along with oil prices. Airline stocks soared, too, on hopes the world will start flying again.

The credit to develop the vaccine goes to a Muslim couple from Turkey, Physicians Ugur Sahin, and his wife, Oezlem Tuereci. The 55-year old oncology professor and his 53-year old physician wife formed the dream team that gave people real hope for the vaccine.

Pfizer and BioNTech claimed the vaccine is 90 percent effective and would soon be available for use by the public.

Sahin was born in Turkey and raised in Germany; he belongs to an immigrant family that worked in a Ford factory. The 55-year-old became a physician with a specialization in immunotherapy. His wife, Oezlem Tuereci, is a board member of the BioNTech Company owned by her husband. Her father is a physician who also migrated to Germany.

Ugur Sahin studied medicine at the University of Cologne, where he graduated in 1990 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1993. Following an eight-year residency at the Saarland University Hospital, he joined the University of Mainz faculty in 2000 and became a professor in 2008.

He married his current wife, Ozlem Tureci, in 2002. The couple has a daughter together.

Their contribution to the Covid-19 vaccine is a remarkable event in the world’s history, giving hope to millions who suffer from the pandemic.
