NA Approves Bill for Up to 6 Months of ‘Paid Maternity and Paternity Leave’. Here’s all that you need to know

On Tuesday, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice unanimously approved the Maternity and Paternity Leave Bill, which allows employees up to 6 months of paid maternity and paternity leaves. The bill will only apply to public and private sector organizations of the federal capital territory.

The PPP lawmaker, Shazia Marri, introduced the bill. In January, the Senate approved the bill; after initial approval, the bill will now be tabled and promulgated in the National Assembly. Once the majority of lawyers agree on the bill, it will be passed.

The Maternity and Paternity Leave Bill entails the following clauses:

  • On the first child’s birth, the mother will be entitled to 6 months paid maternity leave while the father will receive 1-month paternity leave.
  • On the second child’s birth, the mother will receive a 4-month maternity leave while the father will be entitled to 1-month paternity leave.
  • On the third child’s birth, the mother will receive a 3-month maternity leave while the father will be entitled to 1-month paternity leave.
