In Pakistan the practice of child and forced marriages is common and occurs in all regions of the country with the highest occurrence in the Sindh province. It most excessively affects the girl child.

Yesterday, a photo went viral on social media shared by a veteran actress, Nadia Jamil where a 12-year-old was getting married to a 60-year-old feudal.

Jamil expressed her outrage over the incident and questioned that even though the Child Marriage Restraint Act has been passed why is it not being implemented. She further requested the people, the media & the government to take action so that no man can take over a child or woman’ body and life like this.

In response to that, the PPP leader and Senator Sherry Rehman said she asked the Senate to put the Child Marriage Restraint Act on the National Assembly’s agenda. Still, no proper answer was given during the session.

Child Marriage Restraint Act

Last year, a bill introduced by the Senator, was passed in the Pakistani Senate to increase the minimum age of marriage for a female to 18. The bill intended to end child marriage in Pakistan and was passed with a vast majority.

However, the bill faced opposition by the Pakistani religious political parties like Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). The parties claimed that the law was against Islam.

However, Senator Sherry Rehman said that the Muslim countries like Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Oman have already fixed 18 as the minimum age of marriage.
