Nawaz Sharif fraud

The government has accused former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, of receiving a bribe of Rs 105 billion during the New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA) project.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability, Mirza Shahzad Akbar revealed that the money received as kickbacks and commission was added into the accounts of Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM). It is pertinent to note that members of the Sharif family are the owners of the Chaudhry Sugar Mills.

Shahzad Akbar also said Maryam Nawaz played an essential role in the fraud,  as she owned 45 percent of the shares.

“The owner of the private construction firm Technical Associates is a relative of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz. During the construction of the airport, Chaudhry Sugar Mills received an amount of Rs 507 million. Shujaat Azeem, a former special assistant to the prime minister on aviation, also received Rs 50m from the same construction firm.” Mr. Akbar added.

Mr Akbar added that the NIIA project contract was fraught with  many problems. The project was delayed in completion and it cost from Rs33bn to Rs105bn. The former prime minister ignored all these problems for obvious reasons.

Mr. Akbar raised 10 points that proved how the Sharif family used the CSM for receiving kickbacks and commission in the airport project subsequently turning black money into white money and sending public funds abroad.

“Instead of going to a bank, they created a shell corporation called Chadron Jersey Limited and took a loan from it. The terms of the loan were set in such a manner that the bank — instead of providing Rs 15m directly — would send the money to this company. Which will procure the machinery for the mill and send the same to Pakistan.” he said.

Regarding the health of Nawaz Sharif , Mr. Akbar said his six-week bail period is over. The Punjab government had sent a third letter to him, seeking his medical reports from the UK.
