New Zealand Mosque Shooting: Will the attacker be called a ‘terrorist’ or only ‘mentally unwell’?

In a horrifying incident of white supremacy, anti-immigrant sentiments and Islamophobia, 49 people died as a terrorist entered the mosque and began attacking the people there. As reported by an international reporting source, speaking with several people inside the mosque, the reporter told that the attacker entered inside Masjid Al Noor with an automatic weapon and began shooting.

“A gunman – dressed in black with a helmet carrying a machine gun – came into the back of the mosque and started firing into the people praying there” – the reporter said.

It was later confirmed that about 50 people lost their lives in the attack, including women and children. The shootings in two mosques in the Southern New Zealand city of Christchurch is being described as one of the darkest days in the country’s history. The 28 years old man has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in Christchurch on Saturday morning. Along with the prime attacker, two other and men and one woman were also armed, they have been taken into custody as well.

However, despite the Western world covering these terrorist attacks under the label of ‘mental illness’ and being reluctant to label them a ‘terrorist’ except if he was a Muslim, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has cleared the stance on it.

”It is clear that this can only now be described as a terrorist attack” – she said.

She added that the initial findings have suggested that none of these terrorists was on watchlist held by national security agencies. New Zealand is a small island nation on less than 5 million people and has always taken pride in its multiculturism.

”In many of the people affected by this act of extreme violence will be from our refugee and migrant communities. New Zealand is their home. They are us”

The international community, as well as Pakistanis, have spoken against the attack.
