Iran shot down a US drone today, escalating fears of eruption of major military confrontation between Tehran and Washington in the Gulf. Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says that the unmanned aircraft was brought down because it was flying in the Iranian airspace. The US rejects the version, says it was in international territory at that time.

The two different and conflicting versions has also lead to split perspectives.

“The US-made Global Hawk surveillance drone was brought down” in the country’s southern coastal province of Hormozgan. It was shot down when it entered Iran’s airspace near the Kouhmobarak district in the south.” – the IRGC’s website said.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry warns:

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the ”intrusion into its airspace” and warns the US to be prepared for reaction in case of provocative actions.

“Any such violation of Iran’s borders are strongly condemned … We warn of the consequences of such illegal and provocative measures,” ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.

On the contrary, the US military has out-righteously denied any of its unmanned aerial vehicles entered Iranian airspace.

“Iranian reports that the aircraft was over Iran are false,” said Navy Captain Bill Urban, a spokesman for the US military’s Central Command.

“This was an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset in international airspace.”

The commander of IRGC said the shooting down of the drone was with an intention to send “a clear message” to the US. He added that borders are our ‘red line’ and ”any enemy that violates the borders will be annihilated.”
