Pakistan was among the biggest importers of major arms in Oceania and Asia from 2016-2020.

This was disclosed in a report published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) on Monday.

Oceania and Asia were the largest importing regions for major arms, receiving 42% of global arms transfers in 2016–2020.

In addition to Pakistan, South Korea, India, Australia, and China were also among the region’s biggest importers.

Exports by China, the world’s fifth-largest arms exporter in 2016–20, decreased by 7.8% between 2011–20115 and 2016–2020.

Chinese arms exports accounted for 5.2% of total arms exports in 2016–2020. Pakistan, Algeria, and Bangladesh were the largest recipients of Chinese arms.

“For many states in Oceania and Asia, a growing perception of China as a threat is the main driver for arms imports,” explained Siemon Wezeman, Senior Researcher at Sipri, said.

The report noted that global deliveries of arms were flat in 2016-2020, ending more than a decade of increases.

Germany, France, and the United States — three of the world’s biggest exporters — increased deliveries, but falls in exports from Russia and China offset the rise.

It was for the first time since 2001–2005 that the magnitude of deliveries of major arms between nations did not increase from the previous five-year period.

Meanwhile, Sipri said it was too early to tell whether the decline in arms deliveries was likely to continue.

“The economic impact of the coronavirus could see some nations reassessing their arms imports in the coming years,” Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher with the Sipri Arms and Military Expenditure Programme, said in a statement.

“Nevertheless, at the same time, even at the height of the pandemic in 2020, several states signed large contracts for major arms.”

For example, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently signed an agreement with the United States to buy 50 F-35 jets and around 18 armed drones as part of a $23 billion package.

Middle Eastern states accounted for the most significant increase in arms imports, up 25% in 2016–2020 from 2011–15.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest arms importer, expanded its arms imports by 61% and Qatar by 361%.
