A report published by Nikkei Asia has revealed that the government is all set to pass a bill that would place the Pakistan Army at the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s helm.

The report says, “In the second week of the current month, the notice will be issued to revert control of China’s Belt and Road Initiative from a civilian organization to the military.”

The CPEC Authority Bill 2020 was passed in November despite strong opposition from notable lawmakers of the country.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, Junaid Akbar, has reportedly stated that the new proposal will be presented before the parliament for a final vote in the second week of December.

The suggested law seeks to reinstate the CPEC Authority, which has been defunct since the expiry of an official order in May.

If passed, the legislation will give the Armed Forces the liberty to oversee the CPEC projects. The Planning and Development Ministry will reportedly transfer the control to the CPEC Authority headed by Asim Saleem Bajwa.

Subsequently, Bajwa will report directly to the Prime Minister Imran Khan. Moreover, the retired general will replace Asad Umar as the co-chair of the new Pak-China Joint Committee.

  • If the control is transferred to the CPEC authority with Asim Bajwa as its chairman then how does it mean that control is in the hands of the army? Asim Bajwa is a retired army man and is working on a civilian post as a civilian, not in uniform.

  • Fake news and disinformation. Baseless speculations without any factual content.
Siasat.pk should do better in news section.
