Pakistan begins the import of VT4 battle tanks from China

The reports say that Pakistan would procure 100 MBTs in order to meet the deficiency of MBT production in the country.

Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co. Ltd, subsidiary of China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO) said that they had begun delivering new VT4 battle tanks to Pakistan.

The factory, located in Baotou in the province of Inner Mongolia, held a ceremony in mid-April for shipment of the first batch of battle tanks equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) (Option FY-IV).

Chinese news outlets reported that Pakistan is a foreign customer for these tanks, which were produced after the country recovered from the global pandemic.

Pakistan Army Armoured Corps in 2019 selected the Chinese VT4 tank to procure hundreds of new main battle tanks.

Military Analyst Muzammil Hatami announced the selection of the Norinco VT4 for Pakistan’s armored vehicle fleet.

During the 10th International IDEAS Defense Exhibition in Karachi, he said that the VT4 was sure to be used by the country in the future, while Alkhalid II main battle tank is still in the developing phase.

“VT4 has confirmed for future Pakistan army tank and Alkhalid II main battle tank is in developing phase,” – said Muzammil Hatami.

The VT4 is a third-generation MBT produced by Norinco. It is an updated version of the currently used MBT by Pakistan, despite it retaining the 125 mm main gun, crew configuration, and carousel auto-loader of the previous vehicle.

Despite the fact that the details of the tender have been kept confidential, the reports say that Pakistan would procure 100 MBTs in order to meet the deficiency of MBT production in the country.
