Pakistan building the ‘World’s Largest Salt Refinery’ in Balochistan
The refinery will make Pakistan the second largest exporter of salt and the third-largest sale processor worldwide.
Hub Pak Salt Refinery, Pakistan’s first salt manufacturing company, is planning to build the world’s largest refinery in the Hub Industrial Zone, Balochistan.
Currently, the biggest salt refinery globally is in Mexico, which covers an area of over 86,500 acres and produces 10 million tons of salt on yearly basis.
As per the details, Hub Pak Salt Refinery will extend to a staggering area of over 150,000 acres and is expected to be operational in the year 2023. The refinery will make Pakistan the second largest exporter of salt and the third-largest sale processor worldwide.
Ismail Sattar, the CEO of Hub Pak Salt Refinery, has disclosed that the refinery will incur a total cost of over $350 million. The project will also employ up to 2000 residents upon its completion.
Despite having the world’s second-biggest sale reserves, Pakistan only manages to export 400,000 tons yearly while producing up to 4 million tons.
Once the Hub Pak salt refinery is operative, the annual export of salt would rise to 30 million tons, and the nation would earn up to $1 billion each year.
The two main sources of salt in Pakistan are Saline Lakes and the Khewra Salt Mine.
Khewra Salt Mine is located in Khewra in the North of Pind Dadan khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab. It is the world’s second-biggest salt mine while also being a source for the Himalayan pink salt.
The Saline Lakes are non-coastal water bodies with a considerably higher salt concentration and other dissolved minerals than most lakes. Not just this, about 170 similar lakes capable of producing industrial grade salt are present in Sindh as well.
