As emissions from the vehicular exhaust are one of the biggest concerns for the climate-sensitive Pakistan the government sees the solution in adopting eco-friendly cars to reverse the drastic impact of potential climate change.

These electric cars can reduce the ever-rising damage to air due to air pollutants released from vehicles and will also relieve the heavy dependence on imported fuel. Billion tree tsunami is yet another initiative to reduce the panacea of environmental crises in Pakistan.

Tribune reported that the government of Pakistan has set a target of converting 90 percent of the vehicles that are being sold within the country to be run by electric power by the year 2040.

The target to convert the 10,000 vans, jeep, small trucks, and cars to run by electric power is the part of the medium-term target as per the policy of Climate Change Ministry. The government eyes increase in the share of electric vehicles sold to 30 percent of the total vehicles by the year 2030.

State policy also envisions 90 percent of the cars to be sold would be the electricity run cars. However, the country is not alone in the race as many other countries including France, China, and the UK have plans to end the production of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles by 2040.

    It would require indigenous produproduction of electric cars and making a policy to obsolete old cars e.g. 15 years old cars/ 10 lacs driven cars.
