Making history with an incredibly unconventional and groundbreaking move, Pakistan has appointed the very first transgender person on merit in the Federal Government.
In a bold step towards gender equality and achieving social equilibrium, BISP (Benazir Income Support Programme) has hired Muhammad Zahid alias Nomi on the contingent basis, equivalent to SPS-04 in its Islamabad headquarters – according to the notification issued by BISP.
Talking to a local media source, Nomi said that it is unbelievable how she will be able to earn a respectable income, hired on the basis of her merit.
“It is still unbelievable I got a respectable government job on merit and now I will be able to earn money with full respect and dignity’’.
Nomi belongs to Faisalabad but is currently living in Bari Imam and will be serving as a cook in BISP cafeteria. She says that cooking is like a passion for her that has helped her survive through the toughest and most challenging circumstances. Talking about her expertise, Nomi said that her talent nourished under her mother, who was an amazing cook. Driven by passion and commitment, she learned to cook in diverse niches and taste categories.
She said that her appointment is a loud message for her relatives and neighbors, who used to mock her, whose discriminatory and rude attitude forced her to leave her own home. She said her merit-based job will shut those who used to say she can only earn by illegal means.
“I hope now people will feel proud of me rather than degrading me by calling me ‘Khusra’ and asking me to dance’’ – said Nomi.
Naveed Akbar, BISP Additional Director General Conditional Cash Transfers, said that it is a proud moment for them that Nomi has joined them and they are looking to diversify their team more in future as well.
