The country sent around 224,705 workers to several states for various job duties in 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and India sent around 217,699 and 94,145 workers, respectively, for employment purposes during the same period.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and HR Development in a post on Twitter.

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2021, released by the authorities last week, more than 11.4 million Pakistanis have gone overseas for employment in more than 50 nations.

It is pertinent to note that around 96% of the workers are concentrated in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosting the bulk.

Last month, Kuwait, a GCC state, lifted a decade-long ban on visas for Pakistanis, paving the way for more foreign remittances to be sent back to the South Asian country.

It is also pertinent to note that Pakistan’s foreign remittances exceeded $2 billion for the 12th consecutive month in May 2021.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) credited the proactive policy measures by the authorities encouraging expats to use legal channels for their transactions for the record inflows.

The remittances during the July-May FY21 were chiefly sourced from Saudi Arabia ($7 billion), the UAE ($5.6 billion), the United Kingdom ($3.7 billion), and the United States ($2.5 billion).

  • Sometimes I wonder should we be proud of this? Our manpower finds no place in our own country so we ‘export’ manpower to outside.
    Maybe a long term goal, but we should provide this manpower the right jobs in our own country to excel. No developed country has this model of exporting manpower and developing based on remittance only.
