Pakistan is considering scrapping the death penalty punishment for two offenses.
It is pertinent to note that the country has 33 crimes that can lead to the death penalty.

The proposal to scrap two death penalties from the punishments was proposed by the law ministry in its Criminal Law Reforms.
The first punishment pertains to the Control of Narcotics Substance Act, 1977, and the second punishment pertains to the Railways Act, 1890.
In the first punishment, where section 9C of the Control of Narcotics Substance Act is violated, the offender may face the death penalty or imprisonment of life, which may extend to 14 years.
The offender is also liable to pay a fine of ₨. 1 million if the narcotics seized exceed the limits specified in clause (b).
However, now the law ministry has proposed that the word “death” be replaced with “remainder of life.”
Likewise, the ministry has suggested an amendment to Section 127 of the Railways Act.
The existing section says that maliciously hurting or attempting to hurt persons travelling by train or damaging properties belonging to the railways shall be punishable by death or life imprisonment.
The offender would also be liable to forfeiture of property and fine, which may extend to ₨. 20,000.
Nevertheless, now the law ministry has proposed that the word “death” be replaced with “remainder of life” in section 127.
According to a Justice Project Pakistan (JPP) report, every 8th person executed in the world due to the death penalty punishment is a Pakistani citizen.
