The Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry revealed that Pakistan has started producing its own oxygenators. These medical devices are mandatory for the treatment of about 80% of COVID-19 patients.
Oxygenators are similar to ventilators but are less complicated devices and help patients with breathing problems. Other than this, Pakistan has also started producing its own N95 masks and ventilators by using indigenous technology.
Chaudhary said that the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the dire need of investing in scientific development and research. He asserted that Pakistan has been overlooking both of these crucial fields for a decade.
The Minister added that Pakistan is the only country in the entire world that has cut funding for research and development after 2007.
The pharmaceutical stores ran short of disinfectants, masks, and hand sanitizers immediately as people started panic buying after the first two Coronavirus cases surfaced in Pakistan.
To prove an instant solution to the problem, the Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) began producing its own sanitizers and disinfectant sprays.
Fawad stated that in two months’ time, Pakistan would be in a position to export these products, as it now has the capacity to produce 1,000 liters of sanitizer daily.
