Pakistan Railways To Build A 50km long double-track between Karachi Port and Pipri Yard
The containers will be brought from Karachi Port to the Pipri yard.
Pakistan Railways has decided to build a corridor solely for cargo train service between Karachi Port and Pipri yard. For this purpose, a 50 kilometer-long double track will be put down.
A meeting was held at the ministry of railways. During which it was decided that containers will be transported from Karachi Port to Pipri through freight shuttle train on the new track that is to be built. This track will be built by the efforts of the private sector on the basis of build-operate-transfer (BOT).
The containers will be brought from Karachi Port to the Pipri yard. From there, after customs clearance, goods will be transported all across Pakistan.
The ministries will hire a consultant to carry out the project’s feasibility, for which tenders will be floated in the next couple of days.
This will reduce the pressure on Karachi’s city roads and generate business opportunities for exporters and generate big revenue. The Karachi Port has the capacity to handle three million containers yearly.
