Pakistan Ranks 3rd in Asia in ‘Government Support’ For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Pakistan ranks third in terms of relief provided by authorities to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in mitigating the coronavirus’s impact.

This was revealed by the Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) on Tuesday.

According to a survey titled “The Impact of Covid-19 on SMEs”, which was conducted online by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), Asian Productivity Organisation (APO), and SMEDA, a majority of the enterprises in Pakistan were facing raw material (65%) and cash flow (82%) shortage.

Nevertheless, 11.44% of SMEs expect their sales revenue to increase as compared to 2019. Meanwhile, 12.29% of respondent enterprises expect their sales revenue to remain constant.

The survey was also conducted by the APO and ADBI in other countries of the region, including Laos, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Mongolia.

The online survey started in August 2020 and lasted till September 2020, in which 236 SMEs from Pakistan participated.

Among the changes reported in the business environment during the period February to April (2020), Pakistan was the top performer in the region (in terms of %), with only 36.44% of respondents reporting a significant decline in domestic demand.

Comparatively, 72.29% of enterprises in Bangladesh, 63.5% in Malaysia, 50% in India, and 42.52% in Indonesia reported a significant domestic demand drop.

In terms of support provided by the authorities, the government of Pakistan’s electricity support package played an essential role in supporting SMEs directly during these difficult times.

Around 27% of respondents reporting that they received support through the payment of utility bills.
