Pakistani medical student and aspiring actress disfigured in an acid attack outside her home in New York
During an interview with WCBS-TV, the 21-year-old said, "My whole life changed in a matter of five minutes. We do not realize what we have until it's gone."
An unknown man threw a caustic liquid on a Pakistani medical student named Nafiah Ikram in New York City, disfiguring her face and shattering her life in an attack.
Nafiah and her mother were getting out of a car outside their home on the 17th of March, when the man rushed up to the victim, threw acid at her face, and ran off. She was left severely burned and nearly blind.
The 21-year-old, who is studying medicine at Hofstra University, was rushed to the hospital by her mother.
Her father, Sheikh Ikram, said that Nafiah was targeted on her way home from work.
Ikram added, “It is not a random attack; it is a planned attack.”
Meanwhile, The Police Commissioner, Patrick Ryder, asked anyone with information to come forward, announcing a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
“This attack was a vicious and horrendous crime, and I am personally asking anyone with knowledge to come forward,” Ryder said.
The attack left Nafiah hospitalized for more than 15 days, with severe burns to her face, eyes, neck, and hands.
During an interview with WCBS-TV, the 21-year-old said, “My whole life changed in a matter of five minutes. We do not realize what we have until it’s gone.”
She added, “I can only see colors, but that’s it. I want to know, like, what is the reason? What could I have possibly done to somebody?”
“Nafiah has just started to talk again but still struggles to drink or eat because of her severe throat injuries,” her father said.
She struggles to see even a few feet in front of her, and her family is hoping she will regain her vision.
Nafiah’s family said it is overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity and support from friends and family. Nearly $300,000 has been raised in donations to pay for her medical bills.
