Survey: More than 16% of Pakistani households encounter “moderate or severe” food insecurity

Over 16% of households in Pakistan encounter “moderate or severe” food insecurity.

This was disclosed in a report of the Pakistan Social & Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) Survey 2019-20.

This is the seventh release of the survey, based on information from around 195,000 households obtained between October 2019 to March 2020.

One segment of the survey assessed “how many families experience food insecurity by estimating in terms of money, fill with nutrition food, and hunger in the last 12 months.”

The survey report disclosed that Balochistan saw the biggest level of moderate or severe food insecurity at 29.84%.

Moreover, Sindh stood at 18.45%, Punjab at 15.16%, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) at 12.75%.

District-wise, in Balochistan, the biggest level of moderate or severe food insecurity was registered at 48.8% in Barkhan and the lowest at 4.59% in Gwadar.

In Sindh, the highest level was registered at 34.04% in Kashmore and the lowest at 7.66% in Khairpur.

In Punjab, the highest level was registered Kasur at 28.81% and the lowest at 4.18% in Okara.

In KPK, the highest level was registered in Tank at 32.43% and the lowest at 3.94% in Shangla.

Meanwhile, the survey also revealed that across Pakistan, the percentage of children aged 10 years and older who had ever attended school was 60% in 2019-20, compared to 62% in 2014-15.

Islamabad Capital Territory remained at the top of this list at 85%.

“While grand strides have been executed in improving literacy and cooperation rates, the education system continues to remain mainly elitist with access to the best institutional opportunities available only to the wealthy or well-connected,” the report read.
