Pakistan’s Cement Sales Surge Whopping 41% in May

Due to Covid-driven problems, mills in the north shipped only 7,520 tons in May 2020.

The cement sector registered a remarkable growth of 49.86% in May 2021 as sales touched 3.947 million tons against 2.634 million tons in the same month of the previous fiscal year.

According to the data published by the APCMA (All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association), local cement despatches during May 2021 grew to 3.2 million tons against 2.27 million tons in May 2020, showing a robust growth of 40.95%.

Likewise, exports also immensely increased by 105.56%, up from 363,174 tons in May 2020 to around 746,550 tons in May 2021.

Cement mills based in the north of the country sold 2.71 million tons of cement in local markets, a surge of 35.55% over two million tons traded in May 2020.

Likewise, those in the south registered an 81.15% growth in sales as they dispatched 487,311 tons to the regional market in May 2021. These mills had sent 269,003 tons in May 2020.

Nevertheless, exports from the north-based mills grew to 203,625 tons in May 2021.

Meanwhile, the south-based mills sold 487,311 tonnes in local markets during May, recording a healthy jump of 81% compared to 269,003 tonnes in the same period last year.

It is also pertinent to note that the exports from the south also registered an improvement of 53% to 542,925 tonnes in May 2021 from 355,654 tonnes during the same month last year.

During 11MFY21 (July-May 2020-21), total cement dispatches (domestic and exports) surged by 21% to 52.222 million tonnes versus 43.189 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

Local despatches increased by 20.26% to 43.451 million tonnes in 11MFY21 from 36.13 million tonnes in the same period last fiscal year. Exports rose from 7.059 million tonnes during 11MFY20 to 8.771 million tonnes during the same period on FY21 – up 24.25%.

Throughout the 11 months under review, the mills based in the north exported 36.72 million tons of cement to the regional market, up 18.67% from 30.94 million tons in the same period of last year.

According to an APCMA spokesperson, the cement industry is among the biggest contributors to the national exchequer as its contribution has grown to ₨. 143 billion in FY20.
