You can now participate in Phase 3 trials and get free COVID-19 vaccine in Pakistan
The phase 3 trial will be performed on a larger number of people from different countries.
Shifa International Hospital Islamabad is rounding up volunteers for the phase 3 trial of the Covid-19 vaccine to confirm its effectiveness and help fight the pandemic that has killed millions globally. It should be noted that the Shifa International Hospital is the first investigating site in Pakistan to launch this international trial.
What is the phase 3 trial?
The phase 3 trial means that the vaccine has successfully cleared the first two stages, showing only mild side effects, including fever, muscle pain, and headache in 1 percent of the participants. The phase 3 trial will be performed on a larger number of people from different countries. Shifa International Hospital will assess the normal body response against the vaccine.
The first batch of phase 3 trial participants have been recruited successfully to be closely followed-up for one year. The hospital is looking forward to recruiting 10,000 healthy volunteers from Pakistan to be tested for 12 months, during which 50 virtual communications and in-person meetings at the start and end of the trial will occur.
The volunteers will receive indemnity insurance and full medical coverage in case the vaccine affects adversely. It is pertinent to mention that the vaccine contains only part of the virus that cannot replicate in the human body; hence it does not cause the disease.
Who can and can’t participate?
Any individual who is stable, healthy, has a steady chronic condition, is 18-year-old or above, and does not meet any exclusion criteria can be a part of the historic trial. Individuals deemed misfit for the Covid-19 phase 3 vaccine trial include people participating in other vaccination trials, people with a history of confirmed Covid-19 case, people with current diagnosis or treatment of cancer, people with a history of anaphylaxis, people with bleeding disorders, and pregnant ladies.
How to participate in the trial?
Anyone who meets the trial criteria and is willing to volunteer can participate by contacting the Shifa International Hospital on the following numbers for an appointment and further information:
0300-8590112 and 051-8464646/4640
After an individual books an appointment, a counseling session will follow. In the session, all queries will be addressed, and informed consent will be taken. Once that is done, physical examination and vital monitoring of the individual will take place.
What will happen once a participant is selected?
After going through the process, if a volunteer is considered fit for the trial, the Covid-19 vaccine will be administered. The participant will be kept under observation for 30 minutes post-vaccination. A series of weekly messages and monthly calls will then follow until the volunteer must visit the vaccination trial site in-person after 12 months for blood sampling.
