In a tweet, Dr. Shahbaz Gill explained how the word "Safi" holds many meanings in different languages.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Political Communication, Dr. Shahbaz Gill, has once again asked for trouble. He recently took to Twitter and disrespected the Safi Tribe.

About the Safi Tribe

Safi is a significant branch of the greater Ghurghakhti Pashtun tribe. The Safi are divided into three main clans: the Gurbuz, the Mehsud or Masawad, and the Wazir or Wadair, also known as Qandahari. The exact population of this clan is not known; however, it is estimated to be around 3 million, both in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

What was in the Tweet?

In a tweet, Dr. Shahbaz Gill explained how the word “Safi” holds many meanings in different languages. However, the meanings he explained were impolite and insulting. He said:

One word has several meanings: Safi

In Siraiki, Safi is known as the dirty cloth used for dusting; in Punjabi, Safi has a different meaning. Safi is also the name of a constipation medicine that has a disgusting taste. Ingesting the medicine might even make you vomit.

Information is shared with the intent of public interest.

This tweet was in response to Saleem Safi Following controversial Tweet.

The journo was echoing PMLN’s Maryam Nawaz’s assertion, who accused that the PTI government is being run by magic and charms, indirectly hitting The First Lady Bushra Bibi for her Sufi mystical beliefs. Safi’s Tweet is not an alone incident, as there’s a visible pattern. Earlier anchor Asma Sharazi also wrote an article in BBC Urdu, in which she was following the similar narrative first given by Maryam Nawaz.

Dr. Shahbaz Gill’s tweet was not taken well by the Pashtun tribe. They called out the PTI Spokesperson for blatantly disrespecting the Pashtun Tribe.

Here is what several infuriated people have to say in reply to the insulting tweet:

Dr. Shahbaz Gill, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Political Communication, has not given a statement yet to address the angry Pashtun tweets. Only time will tell whether he apologizes for his actions or maintains his silence.

      • you don’t have anybody left in Pakistan than these villagers controlling the whole of Pakistan. The best kids from Karachi have already emigrated to the west and most probably will never come back.

        • I agree. That day is not far when a bearded mullah runs us down the same route as Afghanistan.

  • I am always against abusing some ones cast. Idher bhi kuch maa yavey gujjar qaum ko gali daitey hain.
