The first public school for the Sikh community in Pakistan is all set to open in Peshawar. A news outlet reported that almost 90 percent of construction work” has been finished.

As per the report, the work on the project began two years ago after a piece of land was purchased in Peshawar’s old city.

A woman living outside Pakistan had donated PKR 20 million, from which the community bought eight marlas of land. Following that, the KP government started construction work.

The report said a school in Peshawar had been a long-standing demand of the Sikhs from the province and the tribal areas. Earlier, nearly 300 children from the Sikh community were studying at an NGO-run school in Dabgri. The school working in a rented house had to be closed after the landlords asked the management to evacuate.

However, after the Sikh community demanded a new school, the former provincial education minister and current food minister, Atif Khan, announced the project.

The project will be the first of its kind and give the children of the Sikh community and other minorities an opportunity to get an education in a better environment.
