Despite tall claims of bringing an end to the usage of plastic bags in the federal capital, the government seems to be unable to implement the new law. Just four months ago, the federal government had placed a ban on the use of plastic bags. However, they are still available everywhere.

Following the ban, fruits and vegetable vendors started using paper bags as an alternative. But due to a lack of action and attention from the government, they have gone back to using plastic bags.

Talking to a local media outlet, an official of the Ministry of Climate Change said that its difficult to stop the usage of plastic bags by the cart vendors because they do not have associations that the government can negotiate with.

Another official of the ministry of climate change called on the citizens to help the government in eliminating plastic bags from the capital by refusing to accept it from shopkeepers.

According to Pak-EPA Director General Farzana Altaf Shah, one of the hurdles being faced by the authorities in implementing the ban is the shortage of staff.

“I do not have a single inspector to check violations. The Pak-EPA needs at least a dozen inspectors for the entire city. Most of the field work and raids are being conducted by senior officers, who miss out on office work when they are in the field,” she said.

Ms. Farzana Altaf Shah vowed to take action against the violators of the law. She warned of imposing heavy fines and sealing shops for not complying with the orders of the government.

  • Plastic bag is not the problem, it is a need for everybody. The problem is, “not handling properly plastic bag after usage”. In fact, there is no solution for plastic pollution.
However, if we have lot of trees, we can collect and burn all the plastic after usage. In this way, excess trees will compensate for the plastic-burnt pollution.

  • Nonsense plastic bags are just banned because of making money through more cloth bags and paper bags and so called bio degraded bags from some giants to destroy medium size factories.

I lived in 21 countries all use plastic bags

This government us a big shit on Pakistan
