PM Imran Khan will be attending the opening ceremony of Beijing 2022

Prime Minister Imran Khan will be among the 32 world leaders who will be attending the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics commonly known as Beijing 2022. The purpose of PM Khan attending the opening ceremony is to “express solidarity” with hosts China.

The ceremony will be held on February 4. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed Khan’s participation in the opening ceremony. The Pakistani Premiere is among the world leaders invited by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It is pertinent to mention that a number of countries have decided to boycott the games. The diplomatic boycott is led by the United States of America over China’s alleged persecution of the Uyghur Muslims.

Pakistan decided against joining those countries who will not be sending their politicians to this year’s Winter Olympics. PM Khan is expected to be in China from February 3 to 5. During his visit, he will be meeting with the Chinese President and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang. Furthermore, according to media reports, Khan is also likely to hold a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of Beijing games.

“The main purpose of the visit is to express solidarity. History shows that Pakistan and China have always stood by each other in difficult times,” the foreign minister told PTV.

The world leaders who will be attending the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 include Russian President Vladimir Putin, António Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, along with leaders of countries including Serbia, Poland, Argentina and Egypt.

The nations who have joined a United States-led diplomatic boycott of the Games include Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark Lithuania and New Zealand. The Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20, followed by Winter Paralympics from March 4 to 13.
