- According to the Air Marshal Malik, 12 new planes will become a part of PIA’s existing fleet by the year 2023.
- Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the government was making efforts to transform Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into an efficient and profit-making entity.
PIA – the national flag-carrier of Pakistan has met the fate of Pakistan’s current state of the economy in a way it costs much to the national income as it eats up the billions of taxpayer money in terms of deficit.
Looking at the annual losses that the state-owned enterprise has caused especially in the recent past it looks entranced that the entity would recover any soon. More often the incidents of imperfections in the service delivery and mechanical faults that happen nowadays more frequently during its flight operations adds more inconvenience on the part of passengers.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has said this Tuesday that the government was making efforts to transform Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into an efficient and profit-making entity as it was the national flag carrier and a symbol of country’s identification abroad, APP reported.
The premier was heading a meeting to review the efforts for bringing the PIA on modern lines, said PM Office Media Wing in a press statement. PM, during the meeting, also observed that once a profit-generating airline and a leading institution in the regional aviation sector was pushed into trouble mainly because of mismanagement and negligence in the past.
Aviation Minister Ghulam SarwarKhan, Advisor on Finance Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Secretary Aviation Division Shah Rukh Nusrat, Secretary Finance Naveed Kamran, PIA CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik and representatives of the airplane manufacturing organizations and other senior officials were in attendance at the meeting.
The prime minister was informed by PIA CEO that due to the untiring efforts of the current management of PIA, the airline’s losses were decreasing continuously. The increasing number of expatriates and gradual improvements in the economy are the factors conducive to the promotion of the aviation industry, he was told further.
According to the Dawn report, PM Imran Khan has approved the purchase of additional planes for PIA’s existing fleet. The decision was taken during the meeting of the aviation division. According to the Air Marshal Malik, 12 new planes will become a part of PIA’s existing fleet by the year 2023. Initially, four planes will be added to the fleet by 2020. The size of the PIA fleet would go up to 45 by the addition of more aircraft that are expected to become the part of the national flag-carrier by 2023.
