PM Khan urges the US to lift sanctions to enable Iran to fight against COVID-19 outbreak
The coronavirus outbreak also impacted the US sanctions on Iran, giving them a new air of cruelty unachievable by any civilizational standard.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged the US to lift sanctions on Iran, enabling it to fight the Coronavirus outbreak. Due to unforgiving deterrents limiting Iran’s capacity, it is among the countries worst impacted by the outbreak as it has claimed 1500 lives so far.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi asked the US to lift sanctions on ‘humanitarian grounds’ so that no more lives are lost. Pakistan’s stance came after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani wrote a letter to PM Imran Khan, urging him to play its role and help uplift the brutal sanctions.
“The entire global community is facing an unprecedented pandemic. We must, as leaders, at a time of great challenge and difficulty, show utmost sanctions must be lifted against Iran, in this moment of perils, so that it can use its resources to save precious human lives,” Qureshi said.
‘Maximum Pressure Strategy’: Coronavirus Crisis In Iran Worsens Amidst Tight US Sanctions
The outbreak of coronavirus in Iran poses a serious threat that could unbalance the healthcare system and other resources that are mandatory to fight the disease.
However, the outbreak also impacted the US sanctions on Iran, giving them a new air of cruelty unachievable by any civilizational standard. These sanctions will now be stigmatized in the world community as an act of dangerous cruelty unless the US government steps back from its ‘maximum pressure strategy’.
The coronavirus has shaken Iran to its core and has presented another test for the survival of the country’s political system. According to the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani, the virus strategically impacted the US sanctions by forcing Iran’s neighbors to close their borders, adding to the country’s isolation.
