On Saturday, the police foiled an attempt of Karo Kari (honor killing) in Muzaffargarh and saved a woman named Jarna Bibi.

The victim, Jarna Bibi, married Maqam Khan 18 years ago. The couple had six sons and three daughters.

Soon after, Jarna migrated with her family to Dera Ghazi Khan district, where the trouble began.

Maqam’s brother Kala Khan accused his brother’s wife of having illicit relations with someone called Noor Shah. Noor was Jarna Bibi’s alleged paramour and was reportedly murdered in Taunsa on the 23rd of June.

Kala became a suspect in the murder of Noor, and a case was registered against him in Taunsa Sharif police station.

Following the death of Noor Shah, the tribal leader Nazar Muhammad held an illegal tribal jirga in the Chowk Qureshi, Muzaffargarh. The accused Kala Khan, Maqam Khan, Rozi Khan, and Adam Khan, and others attended the jirga. The victim and her brothers Isa Khan and Niyamt Khan were also summoned to this jirga.

In the presence of all, the Jirga declared Jarna Bibi as ‘Kari’ and decided to kill her along with her newborn baby.

Afraid of the developing circumstances, Jarna Bibi was forced to escape and take refuge in Jhang to save her and her six-day-old baby’s life.

The police took immediate notice of the matter. DG Khan RPO Muhammad Faisal Rana ordered a Rajanpur police team to reach Jhang and record the statement of Jarna immediately.

The RPO further directed a team to make complete arrangements for the woman’s safety and ordered the police to arrest the accused involved in the illegal Jirga immediately.
