The United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has confirmed that the US plans to sign a peace deal with Taliban on Feb. 29. The deal will be finalized a ‘week-long reduction in violence across the country holds’.

The violence reduction, which is a decisive condition for the peace deal among the US and Taliban, started to be observed on Saturday after midnight (Kabul time).

“U.S. negotiators in Doha have come to an understanding with the Taliban on a significant and nationwide reduction in violence across Afghanistan,” Pompeo said in a statement issued on Friday. He referred to the U.S.-Taliban talks in Doha.

“Upon successful implementation of this understanding, the signing of the U.S.-Taliban agreement is expected to move forward. We are preparing for the signing to take place on February 29.”

On the other hand, the Taliban said that a favourable security environment will be created ahead of the peace deal. Furthermore, arrangements for the release of the prisoners are being made as well.
The ‘week-long reduction in violence’ will require the US forces, Taliban and Afghan government-aligned forces to immediately halt all operations nationwide. If everything goes ‘according to the plan’, the peace deal will be finalised on the mentioned date.
